Overview

The Foundation’s Writing Workshop will work with young writers based in Delhi for a two-month writing seminar by author Devapriya Roy, who will be assisted by Anukriti Prasad.

Through readings, discussions, writing exercises, and studio workshops, it will create a  context for writers to develop their craft while simultaneously cultivating a lens of compassion and connection, as they address contemporary challenges of nihilism and cynicism.

In a world that needs, more than ever, the universal values embodied by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Workshop seeks to foster a space for young writers to grow as they refine their skills and sensibilities to write meaningfully from a place of compassion.

Compassion, Connection, Candour: A Writing Circle
3rd February–23rd March 2024
India International Centre

Applications for the first cycle are now closed.

Programme Structure

  • The Workshop will meet every week, in person, over the course of two months.
  • Most sessions will begin with an hour-long, lecture-style seminar led by Devapriya Roy, discussing craft and technique, as well as focused discussions on the readings. This will usually be followed by an hour of writing time, with specific exercises for short pieces that will later be workshopped by the cohort or receive feedback from the facilitators.
  • The Workshop will occasionally invite guest speakers – eminent personalities from the field of journalism, publishing, editing and writing – to interact with the cohort and share insights from their rich experiences.
  • At the end of the programme, writers will have to edit and turn in their final submissions within a stipulated period of time; the best from this collection will be awarded and the entire set will be compiled as an anthology with aspirations to publish with a leading Indian imprint.
  • Writers are also encouraged to document their experience, reflections and submit other pieces for a virtual anthology that will showcase their journey and growth.
  • To curate an intimate writing circle that allows deeper engagement within the cohort, the Workshop will accept 18 young writers for this first cycle.

Outcomes

  • The Workshop will nourish the literary and technical talents of every writer in alignment with a deeper understanding of universal human values.
  • It will curate a virtual collection of their shorter submissions and reflections to document their growth through this journey.
  • We expect the final submissions of the writers to culminate in an anthology, published in collaboration with a leading Indian imprint.
  • The writers will eventually be invited for a public reading of their work to present their writing to a live audience.
  • All writers will receive an official certificate upon successful completion of the programme.
